How to Celebrate an Eco-friendly Independence Day

As the nation comes together to celebrate the seventy-seventh year of independence on the 15th of August, children to the elderly prepare to immerse themselves in the tricolors. It is when we revisit the past and pay tribute to the heroes who bestowed us with freedom. It marked our journey toward self-governance. As citizens, when we express our patriotism, we must also be mindful of our duties toward the environment. It is one of the responsibilities that we, as proud Indians, fought for.

To commemorate our nation, we must play our part as responsible citizens - planning an eco-friendly Independence Day. Keeping environmental degradation in mind, let us come together in our perfectly ironed crisp-white attire and celebrate sustainability with independence!

  • Say No to Plastic and Paper
  •

The nature is like our mother, and we are her children. The way we treat her is what we receive in the end - “you reap what you sow” (pun intended!). As children, we would go above and beyond to comfort our mothers. This is exactly why we saved our Mother nation from the hands of the enemies! So, why not do the same for Mother Nature?  Let’s be gentle with nature when gearing up for an eco-friendly Independence Day celebration.

Did you know, plastic is a non-renewable resource, and can damage nature? The plastic utensils, flags, and balloons can be quite painful for Mother Nature. It takes ages to degrade. Once they land in the ocean, they kill aquatic life! And surely, killing is not the agenda behind celebrating independence. It is time we honor Mother Nature as we hoist eco-friendly flags for Independence Day. At HolyWaste, we believe that crocheted water balloons can be an environmentally safe option. This way, we not only take sustainable measures but also motivate small size crocheting businesses to thrive!

Want to make Independence Day 2024 a fun event? We have three words for you - knitting cloth banners! People coming together to weave the words “Happy Independence Day” instead of putting up a paper/ plastic banner sounds more unique and honestly, more fun.

We live in a digital age where the possibilities of creativity are endless. Thanks to platforms like Canva, it is super easy to curate e-invites that give room to make dynamic eco-friendly Independence Day invitations. And let’s face it, learning how to create e-pamphlets on Canva saves paper in the process!

As the sun sets on Independence Day, the gusto sets too and trash cans become home to plastic flags and badges. Patriotism should not be limited to wearing a tricolor badge, right?

Here’s a fun idea! Why not plant seed-based flags and turn this into a fun eco-friendly Independence Day affair? Seed-based flags have a plant seed embedded in them that can be moistened and sowed for life to grow.

Guess our new motto is, don’t throw, grow!

  • Flowers are the New Rangoli

  • Rangoli colors have been synonymous with Indian celebrations. It is a joyful activity that brings people together. But did you know that the chemicals used in these colors are extremely harmful? They are made of non-biodegradable acids and mica, which can irritate the lungs when repeatedly inhaled. So, let's take an oath toward planning an eco-friendly Independence Day and pledge sustenance! Grab the most vibrant flowers and make immaculate tri-colored flags with your friends! And to make things even more interesting, why not rangoli competitions? Flower-based rangolis look ethereal and pay a delicate homage to Independence Day and  Mother Nature. The best part about flowers is - after they dry, they can be repurposed for potpourri! Flowers can bring more vibrance and hue than rangolis.

Hints on what flower to choose: Orange Lilies, Marigolds, Tulips, Dahlias, Green Chrysanthemums, and leaves.

Apart from designing, flowers can also be stitched together to make beautiful garlands.

  • Reduce Carbon Footprint

  • It is a known fact that a high carbon footprint disturbs the ecosystem, thereby accounting for global warming. To cool our collective mother one initiative a day, let’s generate power from renewable resources (like solar energy) to fuel a sustainable Independence Day event.

And can we say goodbye to loudspeakers this time? The white shade linked to Independence Day is about peace and freedom. So why not commemorate that through musical choirs? There is something more enchanting about singing than recorded songs blasting on loudspeakers.

  • Walk the Talk

  • Spreading awareness is extremely crucial, but has no value if it is just white noise. Independence Day is all about us being proud Indians honoring our nation. So let’s celebrate it by performing a cleansing ritual for Mother Nature! Coming together as a community to clean up post-event helps the planet shine.

The relentless fighters sacrificed themselves to bestow the future with independence. It is time we pay a token of appreciation by doing our bit toward the environment - making your nation trash-free!

On this eco-friendly Independence Day, when we pledge in front of the flag and sing our national anthem, let’s not forget that building a sustainable India is also a role we play as proud Indians. Because the way we treat Mother Nature reflects on us.

    Jai Hind!
